The short answer is about 150 years.

The earliest extant six string guitar was built in 1779 by Gaetano Vinaccia (1759 - after 1831)

The electric guitar was patented by George Beauchamp in 1936

Instruments similar to what we know as the guitar have been popular for at least 5,000 years

The first acoustic guitars in this country date back to the mid 1800's (technically speaking, the guitar is hundreds of years old). Martin started the flat top acoustic in the 1850's, if I'm not mistaken. Electric guitars came on the scene (with a dirty sound and no sustain) in 1936 from Gibson (ES-150) in the hands of Charlie Christian.

I would imagine some might consider this rather pedestrian but I like the acoustic version of Eric Clapton's Layla.

Stringed instruments have been around for thousands of years, but electric pickups were invented in the 1930's.
