Good question. Theoretically you can be one from birth, but you wouldn't really know since you're not thinking of sex that young. To know you're a lesbian (or straight, or bi, or into sheep, or whatever) would take a knowledge of love and/or sex at some level and the realization that you're interested in other women (again, or whatever). I'd venture to say you might be able to figure it out before elementary school's over. Then again you might not figure it out until you're in your golden years.

you can start at any age just depends on the people around you. they may be lesbians and you just follow them.

that's a very odd question. You must be really young not to know. Gay people don't choose to be gay. They are born that way. Just like straight people. If you a lesbo, you have been since you were born. There is no right or wrong age.
