You and your baby are just getting to know each other and your infant is just learning to communicate. No matter how much you study up on parenting, new parents are always pretty nervous and worried about doing the right thing. I've even seen pediatricians behave this way!
Relax, try to go with the flow. As a new parent usually you can figure out hunger by time of day (every 2-3 hours usually) and it is often a really panicky cry in the beginning. Wet or uncomfortable or bored is usually less pressing sounding.
Maybe your wife's instincts are just kicking in faster. Dad's are different and you will have a relationship with your daughter that is just as important even though it will be different. There will be things you will get your wife will miss, and even times in her life when you are her chief confessor.
Running through the list is pretty normal. You can also ask your wife and see if you can pick up the differences faster via her guidance.
Enjoy. It does get easier and a lot more rewarding!

It is a scheduling thing. If you know it has been a minute since the last feeding you know she is crying because shes hungry or if its been a minute since the last time she was changed. You can also tell from the tone of the cry. If it goes from low to high she may be hungry, but if it is close to nap time you know she is sleepy with the same type of cry so you would feed her and put her down for a nap. There is also the loud cry where she may have gas.

It's harder for dad's to figure it out because they aren't with the baby as much as the mother is. I know you said you spend equal time with baby but ... I dont know. Some people say it's intuition, and maybe some of it is, but I feel it's more learned.
As time passes, you will be able to figure it out a little better. in these early days, usually it's just wanting boobies or bottles. as they get older they will be able to indicate more with their attention levels, their facial expressions, certain things their lips do. It's all about observing. I usually always try the breast first, and if that doesn't work, then go down the list.

It is a lovely question, because it means how much you care for your baby.
Going through the whole list is the best way so you can be sure nothing is left and can help your baby.
Keep doing the good job, you will get it... !!

I know what my baby needs just because of timing. If it's been two hours since a feeding and he's probably crying because he's hungry. If it's been 3 hours since he's last diaper change and he's crying then he's probably crying because he's wet his diaper.

You may never get it, but that's ok, I know some Mom's that don't know it either and as they grow their cries change and throw everything you thought you knew out the window.
I think your baby will love the attention Daddy is giving her/him by going through the whole list!!! :)

My baby is 11 mo. and I still don't know. If she's screaming her head off it's usually because she's hungry or something really hurts!
