Let the required number be x
-9 is added to the number i.e. x + (-9) = x-9
Sum is doubled i.e. 2 *(x-9)
The result is -8 less than the number. This means
2 *(x-9) = x - (-8)
Or, 2 *(x-9) = x +8
Or, 2x – 18 = x +8
Transporting variable terms on left side and constant terms on right side we get
2x-x = 8+18
Or, x = 26
That’s the answer

The answer is 10. 10 - 9 is 1 * 2 is 2 2 is 8 less than 10

Unless by "-8 less than" you mean 8 more (you used double negatives there....), then the answer is 26. 26 - 9 is 17 * 2 is 34...34 is 8 more than 26. But I'm guessing you meant the first one.

The equation would look like:
2(X - 9) = X - 8 so
2X - 18 = X - 8 so
X - 18 = -8 so
X = 10

To verify
2(10 - 9) = 10 - 8
2(1) = 2
2 = 2

10
that was easy!
2(x+ - 9) = x - 8
-18 + 2x = x - 8
+8 +8
---------------------
-10 + 2x = x
- 2x -2x
--------------------------
-10 = -x
* -1 *-1

x = 10
