I had a 2 stroke Kawasaki AR125 which did 75 to the gallon and managed 80mph and then as a runabout I had a four stroke Honda CG125 which managed about 90mpg and again sat at 70-80 mph. The Honda only needed petrol and a little engine oil and was very cheap to run. The Kawasaki used petrol and two stroke oil ( bear in mind that 2 stroke oil isn't cheap) and engine oil!
The Honda was just easier to live with, required less maintenance and now has 45000 miles on it and hasn't needed a rebuild yet!.......The Kawasaki needed new piston,rings and crank main bearings at 10,000 miles.........it died at 25000 miles!
both bikes were maintained strictly and ridden the same.
given a choice id take four stroke because they tend to be more reliable and cheaper to own in the long run. Two strokes are damn good fun but need warming up properly before a ride+ they make your clothes stink of two stroke fumes........ahhhhhhh two stroke fumes!

I have often wondered this as well. My reasoning has been, since the size of the engine is regulated at <50cc, and since a 2 stroke has twice as many power strokes as a 4 cycle, then the 2 stroke must put out more power, thus more speed. By the same reasoning, since the 4 cycle has fewer power strokes, it probably uses less gas, but goes slower. I hope someone can verify that reasoning from real life experience.

4 stroke engines use more fuel, are more expensive to produce, while being generally faster than 2 stroke. Although some manufacturers can make 2 stroke engines that go very well too.

A 2 stroke will have a very flat head straight across the fins, a 4 stroke will have 2 round plugs visible from the sides for the cams.

Four stroke is straight up gasoline. Two stroke is a mixture of oil, and gas (in different ratios.. somtimes 25:1, or 30:1..). Many, if not all, mopeds are two-stroke. Four stroke mopeds are illegal in some states, so just stick to two-stroke.

2 stroke engines require you to premix fuel and oil. 4 stroke engines do not. As far as speed or fuel use there is no big difference.

id say 4 stroke is better as it saves a lot of messing about and i also think 2 stroke smoke a lot more than 4 stroke

i have a 4 stroke 125cc and compared to my 2 stroke 125cc scooter it goes alot faster however it does use alot more petrol. 2 stroke is a mixture of oil and fuel, 4 stroke is just fuel

i would always go for a 4 stroke and damn the expense, i hate these whiny 2 strokes that sound like chain saws going passed my door,
