An E-book is simply an electronic version of a book - the formats vary between PDF, Word and other 'document' formats and can be read either with normal computer software (Adobe, Word, Notepad etc) or by special viewers.
The issue libraries normally have is that ebooks are very easy to copy and so copyright is impossible to really control.

instead of books on tape, E-books are electronic books. Meaning they are usually in PDF format (Adobe Acrobat) and reduce the size of conventional books into compressed data. If you possess any handheld device like cell phones or planners, you can download these books and read them as you would a normal book. Assuming that is you have a battery that can hold a charge long enough for you to finish the book. Just another convenience factor in the ever changing world of electronics.

An ebook is an electronic book. They are in various formats including pdf which is quite popular. They are convenient because you can have many books on a CD for example and never go out of print but the publishers can also place various restrictions on them
