I think its kind of like when you were first learning to drive a car and you kept accidently throwing it in reverse (i know i did) they're not quite sure how to manage the mobility thing so they get a little messed up. Either that or they just realized they can go backwards and are trying it out.

It's easier for them to push themselves backward then pull themselves forward into a crawl.
