Your body burns alot of calories just keeping all your systems going.
The trick is to keep your body in a calorie burning mode not a calorie storage mode.
When you mention acidity problems (in addition to the extra weight) I jump to the conclusion that you eat meals and snacks that do not contain protein. Your stomach assumes you'll include protein every time you eat. The acid your stomach produces is only for breaking down proteins. No protein means nothing for the acid to do so it is 'in excess'.
Every time you eat a meal or snack without protein it usually means it's high in starch or sugar. When you eat starchy or sugary meals/snacks you body produces insulin which switches you from a calorie burning mode to a calorie storage mode. Insulin tells your body to store fat. You will also end up producing extra insulin which causes your blood sugar to drop and giving you cravings.
Losing the weight is probably the best thing you can do for your back (and feet, and knees, and heart, and eyes, and......) Don't let the sugar/starch addiction control you and keep you down.
Cut down on the sugar/starches in your meals and add more fat and protein. Don't skip meals (causes insulin spikes when you finally do eat) and try to eat Breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack. Your brain likes the sugar spikes and won't want you to change. Keep your blood sugar stable and you will be strong enough to do it. The weight will come off.
Simple walking is a great way to burn more caloreis while in the calorie burning mode.

Don't have any surgery done - rather go for a manual one-time treatment called Atlasprofilax. The effect is, that the pressure on your discs will be distributed much better and the disc can really recover.
Just - the treatment is available in California and Europe only, costing approx. 220 dollars. It's really worth travelling far.

take this up with your surgeon, many answere are only adaptations of wht you can do. I did it but my experience was different than anyone elses, as a slipped disc can be a very painful and long lasting problem. I have treated many people with the other effects from a disc problem.Good luck it is dooable.

DO NOT GET SURGERY! I have two bulging discs (L4-L5 and L5-S1) and have lost seventeen pounds and am virtually pain free by....starting a Pilates class! No one was more surprised than me. Can't believe how great I feel, didn't think it was possible. Get your dr to refer you to physical therapy with Pilates focus. I have learned so much...back surgery will only help with any leg issues you may be having (ex: numbness, tingling, pain), but not with back pain, or lack of mobility. Good luck!

I had spinal fusion in 1994 and have never regretted it, especially if you have sciatica. You can walk for exercise and weight reduction. Good luck!!
