A lava lamp is basically a bit of wax in some clear liquid. When the wax heats up it expands and becomes less dense... so it floats up to the top. There it cools and floats back down to the bottom.

At the bottom you have a small light bulb that's there to add heat as much as it is light.

You could make one out of any glass bottle.

You go to spencer's, buy a lamp....take it out of the box, and sit it in the metal holder with the light bulb in it, then you top it with the top metal piece....easy as that!
