Also, if I find one worth more than face value, where can I take it to get it's present worth?

Ha. Funny you say take them to a bank, because I work at a bank and that is why I want to know. :-) I got 2 half dollars today from 1967 and the edges looked silver. I also got some $1 coins from 1971 and 1976.

$1 coins 1971 is $2.00
$1 coins 1976 is $2.00
There are $1 coins from 1971-1976 made in silver they are worth $12.00

Very cool that you work in a bank keep an eye out for high grade or error coins.

I think the silver dollar is worth more now, than face value. They were minted in the early 70's. And the half dollar with J.F.K.s profile. I am sure that there are an abundunce of other coins that are in the same category, as far as being worth more than face value, too. Take them to the bank.

Anthing made in 1964 or earlier has greater value than face since it's silver content is higher.

If you have something much older, take it to a local coin shop, or search eBay.

For coins to have value over melt, they need to be in decent condition.

As stated previously, avoiding all 1965 or later coins to make things easier.

Here is the silver content of various earlier silver coins:

Silver dollars contain 0.77344 Troy oz. silver content
Half dollars contain 0.36169 Troy oz silver content
Quarters contain 0.18084 Troy oz silver content
Dimes contain 0.0723 Troy oz silver content
