First of all - make sure your Meta tags truly reflect the content of your site. Ask a few people "Hey, if you were looking for my site, what would you put in the search engine?" and then add the most common answers to your Meta tags. Also, include both correct and incorrect versions of frequently misspelled words and names.
Secondly - Understand that Google rankings are based on hits. For example, I have a web comic coming out soon. If 999 people out of a thousand searching for 'web comic' click on my link, my site will move up in the rankings. If only one person clicks on my link doing the same search, it will move down.
Lastly - Make sure to diversify your efforts if you're really interested in generating traffic. Don't just count on search results, buy some cheaper adds on relevant sites, encourage visitors to spread the word, etc....

First, concentrate on making a good site. Google has articles on it's site about basic SEO (use discriptive header tags, Alt text on images, etc). Choose your text carefully, use words that people actually search for. As for link building and other tweeks; Google will actually down rate your site if it finds obvious attempts to artificially raise it's rating.

only weofui had a partial correct answer.
1. Clicking on your link in a google search does NOT increase your rank.
If this were the case I could create a bot to click my link all day. Google is not that stupid. only a page LINKING to you will have any effect on rank - see point below.
2. You don't have to pay google to get into the organic search results.
You only pay for the advertizing slots on the right side and blue highlighted top sections. If you want to bid on keywords go to adwords and learn how to use it to get results.
https://adwords.google.com/select/main?cmd=Login&sourceid=AWO&subid=US-ET-ADS&hl=en_US
3. Make sure you are in the index
are you listed in google? are your pages indexed? Go to the google search and type in :
inURL:myURL.com
(replace myURL.com with your acctual web address)
3. Keywords, Keywords, Keywords
If you want people to find you by searching for "bikes for sale" make sure you use the phrase "bikes for sale" all over your site. Make sure to use title tags, h1 tags, and good link text.
4. Links from other sites
If a site with good page rank links to you, you *might* get a small boost in page rank. If many sites are linking to you, you will get lots of page rank benifit.
5. Be wary of people offering to increase your rank for money.
Often it's a scam.
6. Make sure you don't get black listed by breaking google's rules.

Google's search engine works on the premise the more hits on a site, the more popular it will be. So get more people to google your site, more often.

I don't know how to do it-one of my web guys did it for me...but there is a way to go into your web page and type in key words so that you are telling the "robots" what to search for. It worked like a charm for me!
