I'd agree with most of the people above, though not in the way they meant it; the vast majority of Americans, for lack of better phrasing, do not realize there are countries other than the ones currently in the news here.

That said, I agree with one of the above posters who said South Africa is one of the places on the list of possible relocations if/when I ditch the US. The economy, though a little shaky right now, is steadily improving, and the country as a whole is up and coming as a strong contender on the world stage.

It's also supposed to be, as said before, one of the most naturally beautiful places in the world. Despite some muck-raking South Africa gets from its past, it has more to it than that, given how it's more or less, aside from Egypt, the only stable country worth anything on the African continent. I can't speak for the whole populace, but all the South Africans I've met have been fairly friendly, and generally well-educated and likeable people.

If not a place to move to, this American would at least like to visit South Africa. Once people get past the bad image from apartheid, it seems like it's really a very nice country. Aside from DeBeers with their diamond monopoly and all.

I work for in a women's clothing store near Michigan State University. I met a woman from there whom is a professor from that university. She is a wonderful lady, great sense of humor and kindness. She is one of my favorite customers. Most Americans react to ppl from any country based on the individuals we meet, however, I find that there are some issues in the countries that need to be addressed by ppl whom are native there, such as AIDS, we have it here too, but many Americans such as Hollywood celebrities are campaigning for aid for South Africa, when AIDS is rampant here as well. It is the behavior of the people that moves the virus from person to person, stop sleeping around and the virus slows down, less babies born with it. Stop the immorality. Next is the 401 scams that are coming from the South African countries, you know the ones that come to your email with tragic stories of death of wealthy loved ones and they want to come to America, please set up a bank account with some of your money and they will put their wealth into it as well and when they get here they will pay you for all your trouble, blah, blah, blah, or you won their lottory. South Africans -- I think , believe Americans are either stupid or can't read. There are a ton of web sites warning of these scams. These type of scams seemed to have originated in South Africa. If I had a dollar for every one of these scams that have hit my email, I would be a millionaire. Now the 401 scam is coming from all over the globe. Most of mine are coming from South Africa still. Get a job, if you have that much time on your hands to sit in front of a computer and make up such garbage to cheat people out of money, then you have plenty of time to go job hunting. These are the only two issues that I have with South Africans, again, when you meet certain individuals from that region, you can't judge the whole nation.

I love South Africa. I always wanted to teach there. I think
South Africans are victims of their past. the world sees you as apartheid having monguls. But after readind and studying about your country, I know that ur country is very much like the USA in that ya'll have a lot of historical baggage that still affects everyday life, but most of your citizens are trying to make the future better.

One day, I'll visit, will u show me around?

By Americans I mean citizens of the United States of America as Canadians ,Mexicans, Brazilians,Colombians, Nicaraguans, (etc.) are all Americans and none of us want to be called American (USA).

Sadly, Americans (most of them - I don't want to paint them all with the same brush) don't think of any one but themselves. It is their education system it focuses on the USA and how "great" it is. The only ways they learn about other countries is if they have a genuine interest in that nation or what ever their government tells them about that nation.
I am Canadian and a North American but not an American!

I would love to visit S. Africa, especially Cape Town, said to be one of the most beautiful places on the planet!

After reading some of the responses, it's clear that many people aren't aware that South Africa (among other things) has the most progressive, pro-active and inclusive constitution of any country on the planet.

Coming out of apartheid only relatively recently, your country has made progress by leaps and bounds; however, it seems the economy is still experiencing some issues, but that's to be expected with any "new" country.

In fact, with the theocratic empire we currently have in place in the US, and with the dangerous Little King George (who has the IQ of a bed of kelp) sitting smugly on his throne in the White House, S. Africa -- along with Canada -- is on my short list to move to. Your country is building and enforcing individual dignity, and values each of her citizens, unlike the "leaders" of this country.

Those who will read the history of your country will understand, and hopefully will appreciate, the tremendous progress that's been made in such a short amount of time.

I think your anscestors should have been fair to other religions, and races.
:)
Yes, about the human rights, thank God, you finally have them.
My friend is from Cape Town, South Africa.
South Africa, is such a beautiful country with lots of natural features.
Your economy is good compared to other African countries, and your AIDS/HIV rate is much less than other African countries, you are making a big effort.
Good Job, God Bless South Africa.

One last thing, this is what you really meant
"What do Americans really think about us?"

Peace & Love.
