It depends on the relationship you have. If I assume this is a person, not a family member and they make fun of you in a semi-public environment, Yes ignoring their attempts to make fun of you will work, but you must distract the audience from the person by changing the subject. If you are in a class, acknowledge that the person spoke, but immediately shift what you are saying to the subject at hand or someone else, but compliment someone else, don't fight fire with fire and never try to re-direct the attention back to the perpetrator. They don't deserve any reward for their bad behavior.
If, on the other hand the perpetrator directs something neutral or postive to you, pay attention to it, but only the appropriate amount.
It works because people tend to do what will produce the results they want. They don't really want to hurt you most the time, they want to be entertained by how you react when you are hurt. If they don't get the entertainment when they push your buttons, they go on to more effective way to entertain themselves.

It doesn't work. It is a good idea to to ignore them or be nice to them because it shows others around you that you are not the cause of their abusive behavior toward you. I personally prefer to avoid them like the plague...

No, some people are relentless. I would still ignore them though and probably just avoid them. There will always be someone who talks smack about you. You have to gain the self-confidence that you are a great person and their opinions don't even matter. They just do it because they feel so crappy about themselves and it make them feel powerful.

I would not make fun of anyone that I didn't really like a whole lot. There needs to be a relationship where some teasing is ok.

To be nice to a mean person is something to practice at. I personally believe people will give up, or be bored or something like that (or at least hope so), if you take no offense from what they say, rather "not understanding" that they are mean to you than becoming angry and say something mean back. But it is hard, I know.

Yes it could...but it also depends on the person. Usually when someone doesn't like you they have a deep hatred for you that they can't over come so even though they might begin to like you and you succeed at getting them to. Theres still a deep filling of hatred that can arise at any moment..(trust me it happens a lot...personal experience)

You can ignore them or try to be nice...The muster of why you are nice to them for being mean throws a person off...Sometimes a person that is mean has nothing but negative values...
