I was 19 when I had a kidney stone. So this was 14 years ago. I woke up at 3 am with what I thought was a stitch in my side. (Side note: I have been kicked by a horse 3 times, never went to the hospital. My pain tolerance is very high.)
The pain progressed from there. By 6 am I was throwing up. By 6:30am I was in dry heaves. By 7am I was in the hospital, Mom was trying to understand me to fill out the hospital forms.
The thing I remember most was the worried look of nurses, as I was white, clammy, and curled in a ball. They gave me a very strong pain killer shot, and all it did was weaken the pain and knock me out. So they would wake me to move me to x-rays, and then to get me to uncurl from my pain filled fetal position. Then again to move me back.
It finally reached the bottom of my ureter, but not into the bladder. Then the pain stopped, this was at 3pm. 24 hours later. The stone never passed, they had to remove it. It was the size of grain of uncooked rice.
Not all kidney stones require a visit to the doctor, but some do. My case did.
What helps?
Drink more cranberry juice to up your urine acidity or take cranberry pills available at any pharmacy department, including Walmart, CVS, Walgreen etc...

Pain is acute and sudden. on a scale of 1-10 and 10 is the worst, most patients suffer at a 10. Kidney stones (most of them) pass within a few days. The plan is keep pain under control, plenty of fluids 80-100 ounces of WATER, anitbiotics as ordered and strain urine to make sure the stone has passed

Kidney stones are hard masses that can grow from crystals forming within the kidneys. Doctors call kidney stones “renal calculi,” and the condition of having such stones “nephrolithiasis.”
Most kidney stones are made of calcium oxalate. People with a history of kidney stone formation should talk with their doctor to learn what type of stones they have—approximately one stone in three is made of something other than calcium oxalate and one in five contains little if any calcium in any form. Calcium oxalate stone formation is rare in primitive societies, suggesting that this condition is preventable.1 People who have formed a calcium oxalate stone are at high risk of forming another kidney stone.

I have had kidney stones and yes, they were worse than birthing a baby. The initial pain lasted several hours and nothing would relieve it. They did eventually pass on their own - it took about 3 days and lots, and lots of water. I did go to my doctor, who sent me for a cat scan. Apparently they were not big enough to warrant any treatment other than the suggestion to drink lots of water to help flush them out.
See your doctor just to make sure this is not indicative of something more serious.

sometimes kidney stones can pass in 24hrs sometimes weeks it all depends on the size of them, they can hurt but regular pain killers such as paracetamol, codeine, diclophenic, and if you were to be admitted to hospital and the pain caused a temp or severe pain you'd probably get morphine, or pethidine but only last resort. if they don't go then you might have to have them lazor blasted or surgically removed. hope this helps good luck.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.
They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!
This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.
It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.

I have heard some kidney stones can be broken up by laser treatment.
I have always heard they are extremely painful when passed on your own.
