"How are you?" is typically a platitude, used for beginning a conversation. But if I ask people who are close to me, I really mean it, I want to know how they are doing.

I want people to say like ' fine ' or 'great' or 'not so good ' I don't want them too tell me their whole life story , but if they are happy or sad I want to know !!!!

yeah, in most cases they say fine, and you?? sometimes if you dont want to know the answer, dont ask!!

nt exatly in most of da cases.......its like a flow.......hi, hello, how r u.....
only in few cases we tend to ask a person "how r u" and we really want to knw hw dat person is......
