The World Cup is a huge sporting event and thus attracts many companies worldwide. In terms of profitability, I don't think many companies become profitable as a result of the World Cup...It is more a marketing and advertising ploy in hopes to boost revenue and sales...with that being said...the firms I would look at are: Adidas, Nike, Mastercard, Yahoo!, Fujifilm, Gilette, Avaya, Deutsche Telekom (which in US is T-Mobile), McDonalds, Toshiba, Emirates, Hyundai, Avaya, Coca-Cola, and Philips to name a few.

I understand that ESPN is happy with the ratings they have been getting, which have to be in large part a function of how well the US team is doing. I never thought of it, but there is only half time to show commercials, no between innings, time outs or other play stoppages. In the gym where I have been watching the early morning matches, there is no sound on the sets, so I don't know if the announcers are doing commercials during play--but I have been spared the horrible buzzing of the vuvuzelas. I know that I must have seen some commercials while working out, but I don't recall when they aired them during the broadcasts, other than half time and between games. I don't think that ESPN is doing it to advance the cause of soccer in the US, they don't call it the Every Single Penny Network for nothing. My guess is American fans can't stand the vuvuzela noise and won't go to soccer games because of the horrible buzzing.

Don't know -- but I'm willing to bet it is mainly non-US firms.
