NFL players use them for the extra edge of vision and safety. High school players use them to look like NFL players. The colored shield are outlawed in high school for many reason the biggest is to examine a players eyes to check for conciseness and concussions if he goes down in a game.

There is a couple of reasons. Some of the players have had eye injuries so it protects them from getting hit in the eye. Some where them to keep the sun out of there eyes, and there are probably some that just wear them because they like them.

High school players wear them to protect their eyes only. Tinted or colored eye shields are illegal by rule. There are no exceptions to this for high schools that follow the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) rule book.
By the way, the NCAA recently got rid of its exception and starting this year has mandated that eye shields will also be free of any color.

Some use them to shield the sun out of there eyes, some wear them so you can't see what direction their looking in while their running. But did you know most high schools require written permission to wear them by a doctor. But if your anything like me, you would wear them cause it looks cool and intimidating... especially the orange or dark tinted ones.

Glare from stadium lights or the sun causes them to "loose" the ball. The charcoal color of the shield reduces glare. Old school athletes still put black face paint under their eyes to reduce glare.

Two reasons one being it protects your eyes from being poked. Two being that its harder for the defense to read the offensive players eyes.
