No. The original Phantom of the Opera was a Gothic horror novel written sometime in the late 1800's or early 1900's. And it's really not a very fun book to read either.

In the book it does actually say it was based on a true story, but that does not necessarily mean that the characters were real. Also, maybe that bit of the book was fictitious too!? Sorry can't be more helpful!
