The term "Hillbilly" actually started in reference to people on the west side of Michigan back when most people lived on the east side of Michigan around Detroit. This was around the time Michigan became a state. They were people who lived in very rural areas which were, of course, "hilly". You could travel right next to a persons living quarters and never know they were there because of the hills. So "Hillbilly" refers to any one who lives in a very rural area, think "Deliverance".
Jeff Foxworthy states that being a redneck is some who has a "glorious lack of sophistication".
So a hillbilly is location and redneck is sophistication.

A hillbilly refers more to where you come from, and a redneck refers more to one's actions. You can be a redneck in the middle of the city, but most hillbillies are from rural areas.

And you can find them anywhere.

I highly suggest reading "The Redneck Manifesto". It gives someinteresting takes on why people feel like they can use terms like redneck, but not others that may be considered racially derogatory.

I live in Georgia....I am married to a redneck, rednecks are nothing
like hillbillies. Hillbillies generally grew up in the middle of no where, has no education and is content sitting on the front porch swatting at flies.....Rednecks grew up in the suburbs, enjoys hunting , fishing, and any other sport where they are killing animals. drives a big truck and looks for mud puddles. both are idiots
