Does anyone know what kind of creature i found in my garden? It is about 8 inches long. It is almost as skinny as a thread. It does not appear to have legs. It moves in a weird way. Thanks.

It is skinnier than a fishing line.

It is much, much skinnier than an inchworm. IT IS ABOUT THE THICKNESS OF A THREAD.

Is it in water, I think it may be commonly called a hair or wire worm.

Sounds like an inchworm. Despite the name, it is actually a lizard without legs.

Then and again, could just be a snake

Definitely an elephant hawk moth larva -Deilephila elpenor. Quite common this time of year when searching for places to pupate. Often picked up by birds, which, alarmed by the realistic eye-spots, drop them in the middle of gardens. The moth is very attractive - pale green with pink markings.
