The new trophy is 36 cm high, made of solid 18-carat gold and weighs 6175 grammes. The base contains two layers of semi-precious malachite while the bottom side of the Trophy bears the engraved year and name of each FIFA World Cup™ winner since 1974.
World Cup™ winners retain it until the next tournament and are awarded a replica, gold-plated rather than solid gold

mac got it right!! it is 18carat gold throughout. its on the FIFA website.
As for didley's answer.... dude! you are combining different histories together. This world cup has never been stolen, as for the story about the dog thats the Jules Rimet trophy which was the trophy used for the world cup upto 1970 but then awarded to Brazil to keep forever as they won the competition 3 times.

Wow, mac's answer is really precise. But the truth is, it is only covered in gold foil like a Hershey's kiss. Underneath is rich milk chocolate--which the winning players devour once they get back to their dressing room.

No gold is to soft in its pure form to be used for anything. It needs to be combined with other metals to make it sturdy enough to take a bit of abuse.

If it was, the players would find it too heavy to lift and parade around the pitch with. I would also have said it would be too expensive to make but given the amount of money in football nowadays, they would be able to afford it!!
Maybe the winners medals are though!?

No, it is simply covered with gold, it isn't a massive golden cup.
