Yep, bluebuddha64 nailed it. Dumbledore was dying the whole book. He had that wounded hand that could not be healed and he acted like he needed to get Harry to take over his quest to eliminate Voldemort's soul pieces before he died. It was obvious that Snape knew Dumbledore was dying and Snape told Dumbledore about the unbreakable promise. Snape was following instructions when he killed Dumbledore.
I predict a very dramatic end for Snape in the last book. He will reveal that he is still working against Voldemort and will save Harry because he was secretly in love with Harry's mom.
Reread the chapter Snapes Worst Memory in book 5. Snape was picked on by James many many times. The thing that made this his worst memory is that he snapped at Lilly and he never had a chance with her again after that. I speculate that his love for Lilly is why he turned against Voldemort in the first place.

Dumbledor was NOT murdered. He asked Snape to kill him because he was suffering and so that Draco would not become a killer. Technically that makes it suicide.
LOTS of minor characters where murdered.

dumbledore gets murdered. it's complicated though. i highly recomend that you read the books, they're so wonderful. the whole world loves them!
