As an old techie, I tend to look at the hardware, or more specifically the connections.

If your connections are in an area that has gotten dusty over time, clean it out with appropriate dusting measures or canned air. Unplug your computer, unplug your speakers from the computer, whiz out the connector with canned air, clean both ends with alcohol on a cotton swab, whiz out with canned air again, make sure you have a secure connection (if loose, tape steady in the squarely-in position), and then restart the computer and see if your problem is resolved (suggest you clean all other connections while you're back there).

Best wishes! :)

Your volume is down on another program that may even be closed.

I used to have this problem. Some media players have volume controls that stick even when the program is off. Go through all your programs that have volume control and turn it all the way up. Also, check your volume panel in the control panel.

Click and make sure the slider is at high. Sometimes if you have a Microphone that is picking up feedback from the speakers, the slider automatically lowers itself.

I have seen this problem with creative sound cards set for digital output only. Usually has a nasty hiss too.
