Do you think it should depend on the nature of the crime, or the age of persons involved? I believe that most of them need to stay in jail for good. But that's just my opinion. Even if they are the lowest level offender, you never know who will do it again. What are your thoughts?

Maybe not for life, but at least long enough for them to not be in any shape to do it again (even if they wanted to) by the time they get out.

Believe it or not I think it depends upon the actual crime. I had a guy who worked for me a few years ago that was just released from jail for this.... then I talked to his P/O and can you believe it - this guy was 19 - his g/f was 17 (3 weeks shy of 18) and her parents knew they had been dating for almost a year - but for some reason they had last minute doubts and pressed charges on him - That was wrong -

Now it would be different if he was 19 she was 17 and the parents from the start said - uh darling this isnt going to happen! Or especailly if he is 19 and she is 13 or 14! Or even worse.... Some adult with a small child, toddler or infant - some cases are just obvious and yes they derserve to spend their life behind bars, they took the innocence of a child - they deserve to lose thier freedom!

Obviously there are many flaws in the justice system. But, like you I think it should depend on the nature of the crime. For instance, we all know kids make mistakes and I wouldn't want to think that some kid who got drunk at a high school party, made a bad decision mainly based on peer pressure, was going to be locked up for the rest of his life (or her I suppose, but not likely). Also, I'm not one to go too far outside my age range, but in some cultures it is not uncommon for a man to marry a girl under the age of 18. In this case where all parties involved are informed and willing, who are we to say whether it is "right or wrong"? Not my cup-o-tea but I'm not God and don't feel I should judge upon something I know nothing about.

I live by the rule that "all power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Too many times in history we have seen evidence that "one way, one will" will only end in tradgedy. Look at the Nazi regime to get a better idea of what I'm talking about.

Child Molesters, and Rapist do not rehabilitate. Although there are allot of wrongly accused people in jail for it but that is the way the Justice system works. I personally think convicted violent sex offenders should be publicly executed for all to see this would cut the bastards down. The weak dont have to watch.

Well I think they should do some serious time becasue they are poisining children. But fact is A man may molest a little girl and get 2 or 3 years a woman may molest a boy and get house arrest or probation! (the teacher scandal a few months back) but if it's a same sex offender then they get a little harsher sentence. I don't have children but when I do, and some idiot tries that ish, the police will be called alirght..... to take his/her A** to the emergency room.

I agree. However, we need to be careful that we don't punish a 19 year old guy for having sex with his 17 year old girlfriend in such a severe manner. Now, I'm not saying the guy should get off scott-free (he DID commit a crime and he KNEW it was a crime) but he does not deserve life in prison.

Rapists and child abusers most definitely do. They cannot and will not be rehabilitated and are only a disease and burden on society.

Yes with an explanation. Someone convicted twice of rape of molestation of a pre-pubescent child, if indeed he or she survives the second sentence, should be put into a Spartan, well-locked facility for sex offenders only with no work assignments except to clean his or her own living space. Subsistence-level simple foods and proper medication should be provided in a safe environment, with any assault on a fellow resident or staff member meaning another sentence in a real prison. Television should be limited to news and other informational channels, or major networks with a TV-14 ceiling on ratings. And only adult family members should be allowed supervised, non-contact visits. All incoming phone calls should be allowed, but no outgoing, and outward mail should be supervised.

If they deserve the label then I'm tired of giving people chances to correct their ways. Especially, if they know it is wrong and keep doing it. Repeat sex offenders and repeat DUI convicts all deserve the same fate.... a tiled cell with a drain in the center, a merciless guard, and a .22-caliber bullet to the back of the head.

Not very nice or compassionate but how many times do these people have to be convicted of the same crime!!??

YES! Why do you always see REPEAT sex offender, they don't get better. And if you say no to this question then you obviously do not have children or children in your life at all, that is just a haneious crime, that needs to be delt with in a better manner that what it is, and I do agree that it depends on the crime. But trying to rehabilitate them is just a waste of our taxpaying $$$'s

No, because not all sex offenders are as bad as rapists or child molesters. Some get put in jail for statuatory (sp) rape and even though the sex is consentual, for example if they guy is 20 and the girl is 17, then he gets sent to jail as long as her parents press charges.

I think it's awful some of these people were in situations such as being teased and led on by a person, having a little bit too much to drink, going back to someone's house, then ending up being charged with rape in that situation...those people are lumped in with the truly evil child molesters.

So to answer your question, I think it would depend on the crime, the person and the situation.
