Sun tan lotion helps you get a tan, it draws the suns rays into the skin. Where as sunscreen prevents the suns rays from reaching the skin in harmful ways, it prevents the skin from getting a tan as fast.

Sunscreen has an ultraviolet blocking ingredient to protect you from the sun. Sun Tan Lotion may have some sunscreen in it, but probably at a very low level (No. 2 or 4, rather than 30 or 45)
Years ago people weren't so concerned about the bad effects of the sun, and the products called Sun Tan Lotions then were designed to increase the tanning effect of the sun and to moisturize your skin, but offered almost no protection against burning.

Sun Tan Lotion is supposed to keep you from burning, but let you get a tan. Sunscreen protects you from the sun's harmful rays

Sunscreen has some block from harmful sun rays and tanning lotion might not. If you want a tan make sure the lotion has some spf to block sun rays that cause damage to your skin and sometimes cancer of the skin.

Sun Tan Lotion is very, very low SPF. It is supposed to keep you from burning, but let you get a tan. Sunscreen is higher SPF and protects you from the sun's harmful rays, including the ones that will give you a tan.

Sun screen blocks out the suns damaging rays and a lot of times keeps you from tanning, like if you use s.p.f. 45 to 60 or higher. Sun tan lotion helps keep your skin moisturized as you tan and only has a low amount of sunscreen in it like s.p.f. 4.

Unless you are going to be in the sun for a very short time, I suggest that you use sunscreen as it offers better protection against the sun. Nobody likes the effects of long-term sun exposure, after all.

sun tan lotion is supposed to help tan you and sunscreen is supposed to prevent any type of sun reaction to your skin such as tanning OR burning.

suntan lotion has a darkening chemical in it that helps make your skin darker faster and has a lower spf. sunscreen doesn't have that chemical and has higher spf. regardless of what you may hear, you can still tan using sunscreen. it doens't totally block the sun's rays. just most of the harmful ones.
