I work closely with the Courts and Judges are always moaning about the sentences they are allowed give. By law, if someone pleads guilty they have to have a 1/3 reduction on their sentence. So it really is not the Judges fault but the law and Human Rights activists (especially the one in No. 10). Also, even if the offender has loads of previous convictions, they are only allowed to sentence according to the maximum penalty of the current offence. e.g. if someone has been convicted for GBH loads of times and plea bargain for abh, their sentence will be much lower as the maximum penalty is much less.
Also, in reponse to the person saying that people don't turn up for Community Service, if they do not turn up and do not have an acceptable reason (e.g. doctors note) then they will be breached and returned to the courts. The same goes for Probation. If you don't turn up you WILL go back to the Courts. And the reason the Government are bringing in all this legislation is because our prison a seriously overvrowded. I am not saying i agree with what they are doing because I really am not, but seomtimes prison is not the best place for these people. Prison is not called "The Criminals University" for nothing!

I dont know, but my word how many people agree with you on this; you can kill a pregnant woman with a car, and get 4 months, you can kill a baby and get three years. I want to know why, when they say "life", doesnt it mean LIFE, not 5 years with time off for good behaviour. A ten year sentence should mean someone serves 10 YEARS -if he behaves himself- if he doesnt, add another year to his sentence for every time he misbehaves in prison. Also, the "community service" sentence instead of jail- its no punishment, as half the offenders just dont bother turning up. Give coppers a lot more money, have a lot more of them, and let them see their job IS worth doing. If they do the crime, make them do the time, and stop all this "prisoners rights crap" What about Victims Rights for a change!!!

I dont know if this answers your question but I thought it might be something that would interest people. I am a psychology student and I have found research to do with attraction in relationships that says women who are considered attractive will recieve lighter prison sentances than women who are not considered attractive, unless their beauty aided them in the crime, like for example fraud where you seduced people to take their money. How unfair is that for the non attractive women? it plays to the idea of ugly witch beautiful princess that we constantly reinforce to our children in books and stories and media influences.

I don't think they are - there are just sensationalist stories banded around by the cheap papers which only show one side of the story in order to get small minded people excited. Often even the public sitting in on a case don't get to hear the whole story. For legal reasons, sensitive issues are discussed in the absence of the jury and the public.

The fault isn't with the judges at all. Judges can only work effectively if the legislation works effectively. Legislation is created by parliament.
