Anytime there is a list of top movie comedies of all time, it is always near the top. But I just don't get it. I think it's more amusing than funny. It definitely doesnt stack up to Animal House or Slap Shot, IMO.

It's the dumbing down effect...
We are turning into a race of idiots...E.G..... did you know that in the18th century two of John Adams sons held political jobs in their teens... one was the ambassador to Katherine the Great of Russia,
the other was assign to some other Royal court as an attache...
Even the college educated now find the repugnant and moronic humorous...instead of sad and a waste of time.
Airplane is just one example in a continuing stream of idiocy, perpetuated by the morally corrupt.

In it's peak time with relevant references, it was pretty funny, but watching it now, it today's day and age I have to agree, that it really isn't all that funny. It is the same with any "spoof" move though...if the subtle references to spoof the "current" culture are not there, you miss the entire meaning and it is not funny in the least.
Another "spoof" movie that is similarly date but my 12 year old still found funny is "Shriek", which spoofs teen and horror movies. My son never saw "Pretty In Pink" or "Grease" or saw the "BEEFFYYYYY" commercials for Chef Boyardee, but still thought it was funny; however, 10 years from now, I doubt he will.

I agree with Animal House & Slapshot. I think Airplane! is really good as well but you're right that it's not on par with the previous two; it's a parody and the others are not. Do you like other parodies? (Like Hot Shots, Police Academy)

I love any kind of jet / airplane movie. However, Airplane, I did not find that amusing. It is, so far, the lease favorite flight movie that I have seen. It should not hold that high of a rating, in my opinion.

You must be kidding.... Airplane is one of the most hilarious movies of all time. You have to watch is a few dozen times just to pick up all of the funny things that are happening in the background. Kareem Abdul Jabar flying as co-pilot.... classic! "Over - Over", "Roger - Roger", "Clearance - Clarence"... so funny!!

I can agree to a point. It's just silly humor kinda like ATHF maybe?! But i do agree Animal House or maybe Chevy Chase's vacation movies can be a bit more entertaining.

No, I think it's very much overrated. it relies on sight gags with a sucession of cliches and innuendo for cheap laughs. nothing of real substance, but what the heck, it's only a movie.
