I see in many rock concerts and live performances, the singers & musicians are wearing earphones (some of them are flesh colored) or headsets. What are they listening to? Instructions, timing signals (beats), the actual song they are singing (prerecorded) or is it a noise-cancelling device?

They're called ear monitors. They use those to monitor the music and or vocals so they can hear what ever they need to hear on stage.

They wear the earphones so that thay cam hear the music, you may think that the music is loud enough but if you're not on the same beat you will throw everyone off. I know b/c i'm a drummer and if the singer is ahead of the music it all falls apart. Plus you have to add in the crowd noise from fans.

I am a HUGE concert goer and acually play with a band that uses the same devices ...they can acually be both a noise cancelling device ( because of the high volume of decibles ) and also a time-beat-signal device ( but those are usually just done by the drummer ) i use one to decrease the decibel level so that my hearing wont be damaged by the loud volume ..most artists i go to see do the same thing to keep thier hearing from being damaged ...

The artist is listening to what He or She is doing.
They are listening to what they are singing or playing so they can tell if they are out of key. Without this, it is impossible to here what you are playing or singing!! And the artist would play or sing off key and sound real bad!!
The device is nothing more than a speaker for them to here themselves over the background noise level.
The headsets are flesh colored because they do not want the ear phones to be "standing out" noticable.

So they can hear themselves over the crowd and amps. Also I think it is for signals so they know when to start and other things that might be important to do a good performance. They can still hear the crowd, the amps and the drummer but it's not that loud as it is when you don't wear them. The proformers still need to hear the things around them so they know what is happening around them.

I think some of them are listening to the beat, yes, that they may not be able to hear very well, especially if they are moving around a lot.

But I think most of them do it to drown out the overblown, overamped sounds, so that they don't go deaf. It's been scientifically shown that exposure to loud decibels can harm hearing. The loud sound literally beats down the internal hairs necessary to hear things.

Singing is something that everybody can learn and improve. Of course, some are more naturally skilled than others, but even a poor voice can be overcome by dedication, practice, and more practice. Even if you're content to sing in the shower, there are some things you can do to improve your voice. This is probably the best online course to improve your singing skills https://tr.im/GrXol

so thast they can hear themselves and either keep doing a good job or make adjustments accordingly. sometimes bands will have amps onstage, but facing the perofrmer. this not only give ambient sound off the back wall, but also serves the same purpose as the headsets.
