Actually William Edward White was the first black player in the major leagues. it's a little know fact but I just wanted you to know. He played for the Providence Greys on June 21, 1879. It's generally accepted that Moses Fleetood and Welday Walker were the first 2 to play for the Toledo Blue Stockings in the American Association in 1884. After thet no black players appeared until Jackie Robinson. in 1947.

Pumpsie Green was indeed the first Red Sox who was an American of African descent.

It is interesting to note that the team with the first all minorty line-up, the Pitssburgh Pirates (all black/Latin lineup on September 1, 1971) doesn't have a black player on its current roster.
