While there have always been "dirty tricks" in politics. The republicans have perfected it. This was epitomized by the actions of the Nixon campaign exposed during the Watergate scandal.
Reagan wasn't as paranoid as Nixon and smart enough to realize he didn't need to use "dirty tricks" against Carter or Mondale.
However, they were back at it against Clinton and during both GWB Bush campaigns.

Why indeed? I guess the same question could be asked as to "Why do democrats like Ted Kennedy go insane on National TV and scream like their trying to call in a wild bore?" Well the answer is easy, its because theyre all politicians and theyre all pieces of sh**. It isnt just the republicans or the democrats. Look at it, the right-wingers have titans such as Karl Rove to fight for them, the leftists have the media.(Although it isnt that much of blessing when the liberals have jerkoffs like Dan Rather pulling for them) The sooner we realize that all politicians are evil, the better off we'll be.

Because these "drunk with arrogance" Republicrooks with their fascist agenda figured out 40 or so years ago that the only way they could get their candidates elected was by deception, fraud, dirty tricks, libelous smear ads, vote supression, voter intimidation, poll taxes, literacy tests, "felon" (not) lists in Florida in the 2000 campaign, jamming of phone lines on election day--in short, any and all criminal acts they can think of to STEAL elections! They know they can't win with honest campaigns, this evil cabal who laugh at the foundation of our democracy--free, fair and open elections--because, for the most part, the voting public has failed to demand their prosecution!
The thuggery of Nixon and Co. PALES by comparison to the crimes of Bush/Cheney & Co. (according to John Dean!), so I ask why the American people are not demanding that Congress hold this bunch accountable for their grievous misdeeds?

For the same reason that the Democrats use political thugs like Dean, McAuliffe, Ted Kennedy, Pelosi, and Ickes. It's six of one side, half a dozen of the other.
