One system of tiling a shower requires rubber membranes and floating a mud floor. It is very time consuming and some what difficult. Schluter Systems (the maker of the metal trim for the edge of floor tile) has a system that is very easy to install. It is somewhat expensive, but reduces the time of installation and makes it easier for the novice (or even the experienced) tile setter to install a tile shower. It's still somewhat difficult, because you end up "floating tile" in spots, but definitely easier than the mud floor system. Check out this:

You can get it at most tile distributors, or they can at least order it. I'd recommend watching the installation video, too.
After you install the system, start with floor, and the curb and then the walls. Caulk all the inside corners with a caulk that matches the grout.
If you do use it the system, you can email me and I'll give you pointers. Good Luck

Before you just jump into tiling an area, there is preparation needed. It might be best to use stone or ceramic tile because they are very water resistant. Try the source because it has a lot of good tips.
