Google has free email and lots of people I know use it and really like it.
Other than that, I am not sure how many places there are but you can do a quick search online and come up with tons of responses

gmail (google mail is great) let me know if you need an invite to that. Also yahoo mail (mail.yahoo.com) has a great spam filter. There is is mail.com and hotmail.com but if you have to get a new e-mail address gmail and yahoo mail are the two best.

My favorites are GMail by Google and goowy.com. If you haven't checked out the latter site, you should. If you need an invitation for GMail, send me a private message with your e-mail address and I will send you one. You can also activiate GMail by sending a message to your cell phone.

Do they still have excite.com? I use to have a free one there some years ago. I hear google is doing e-mail addresses now as well. haven't checked though. good luck
