While you're in school, you could learn about the causes and effects of disasters, both natural and man-made, and know how to deal with each case. Study past and recent disasters to learn about the impact of the disaster and the response, see what could have been done better or improved. Identify what you could offer and organize a plan of action for each case. Teach others about your efforts and find some community support. You may never be really prepared for everything, but you'll always be better off by being prepared.

Suggest you do some preparation: Learn first aid, including CPR, get together a first aid kit, with various sizes of bandages, any prescription drugs you may need, etc. Have a food supply for several days and a means to purify water; also flashlight, radio, etc.. Encourage others to do the same. In the event, you could help run errands for rescue workers, perhaps help in raising building materials trapping victims, and give some just a shoulder to cry on (perhaps literally).
