I live in Tennessee. Last night a large flying insect came in my house. It was about 1 1/2 to 2 inches long. Brown in color. Has 6 legs. A long thick body with long brown wings that go slightly past the body. It had pichers on its mouth area and long knotted antennas. I have lived in Tennessee all my life and I have never seen anything like this before. Are there any web sites that I can visit to possibly identify this insect. Or if anyone possibly knows what this may be please let me know

I have yahoo searched flying insects and have found nothing...there are alot of pictures that pop up but nothing that is similiar to the one I saw. Is there any web sites that will let me put in a description of the bug and it will give a possble conclusion to what it may be or pictures of similiar bugs?

Some entomology departments have a dichotomous tree type of program where the program asks you questions until it determines what insect it is. Often they will give you pictures to go by as reference. I'd recommend catching one and taking it to the entomology department of a local university.

If it has a hard brown outer body shell, I've seen something similar up here in Indiana. They land all the time in the summer on our basketball court. I think it may be some kind of a beetle.

I just saw a program on the discovery channel and it sounds like a male carpenter ant. Go to the public library and get a book on insects or go on line and do search there.

You'll need to capture it without destroying it. Maybe a glass jar and carbon monoxide. Then take it to a local entymologist for identification. Try your local university. Or maybe your local exterminator. Good luck.
