Build your own, or ask your friend to build it for you. Better style than Apple, cheaper than Dell, have all the features you want and none of what you don't need.

Say NO to HP!! Their customer service is lousy. Here's why:
I had an HP Pavilion that would slow to a crawl and sometimes not even boot. HP replaced it 3 times (but refused to admit there was a conflict between the hardware and software) but the replacements all had the same issues. BTW, I hadn't loaded ANY additional software, this was straight out of the box the way it was purchased and it still wouldn't work!!
After the 3rd replacement, I requested that they trade in the POS computer for a decent scanner (much less expensive than the computer) or at least a different model of Pavilion and they refused. Even after talking to the supervisor, they couldn't see that making the customer happy with a less expensive product (and no refund in the price difference) would be a win-win. So I will never purchase another HP product and I urge you not to, either.

They are all good computers. When thinking of buying a new computer there are 3 things you should consider.
1. What do you want to do with the computer.
2. When you know what you want to do, then find the software that will do the job for you, and,
3. Buy a computer that will run your software programs in the best way.
There is much more software available for WinTel based computers than for Apple computers.
Also, do some research on the service requirements and warranty work of the system you select before you buy.
Some companies offer a good warranty at the point of sale, but then do not deliver if you have a problem.

Apple is really the best for video and audio editing, and if you think they're out-dated you obviously haven't tried OS X (tiger is one of the best OS's I've ever tried). With the new Intel dual core inside you can run windows natively and have it work better than if it was running on an hp. Short of dropping 21-2300 dollars for a top of the line imac, an hp is going to be alot cheaper. Like I think alot of people already know, apple if you can afford it, hp if you can't. Even with Linux you have tons of open source programs at your disposal. If Microsoft Office is too expensive (and buying anything directly from Microsoft is about just as expensive as mac when it comes to software, if not more) try openoffice. it will run on windows, mac, or Linux (just not on the Intel chip yet). So with Linux you can do just as much as you can with any other OS but its a hell of alot cheaper.
I myself am an apple person though, I don't think I will ever go back to PC especially after the Intel chip is out.

Apple if you can aford it, and are willing to put up with a few internet sites not working properly. The user interface is terrific, and the chances of getting a virus or spyware are greatly reduced.
As for the "wintel" box companies: I've had problems with laptop computers from both Dell and HP. I think I would recommend Toshiba. They're more expensive, but I think the quality is higher.

If you have a friend that can build a computer I would recommend that. We had a computer built for only $300 with an awesome processor and lots of RAM. If this option is not available to you I would recommend HP. Apple computers are dinosours and dell has really bad customer service. My first computer was an HP and it lasted me 6 years.

From my experience, HP products seem to be the best and most reliable for the money. I currently have a Dell computer, which works great, it just had some problems working with a different manufacturer's printer (Epson). I have only used Apple computers (never owned them) and just prefer non-Apple's myself... but there are people who absolutely swear loyalty to Apple.

All computers are machines. It is the luck of the draw whether you have any problems with one or the other. I think which ever brand you choose, get the best your budget allows for.
In other words, Don't skimp to save a buck! It will generally come back to haunt you! My money is on Dell, although I have had, HP, compag, and toshiba without any problems.

I personally have loved all the dells I've owned. I know a lot of people complain about their customer service, but they have been great to me. My laptop crashed 2 weeks before taking a very important exam (in which the laptop was required) and they had a new one shipped to me, just in time.

I've always had good luck with hp Pavilion computers. You can usually get them bundled with an all in one printer, digital camera, and loads of software for a very good price.
Check BestBuy or Circuit City for prices.
