It simply has less inertia therefore requires less force to move. Since the train applies the same amount of force when it is taking off regardless of its load it will accelerate faster when it is empty instead of full.

The engine produce the same force empty or loaded. Using newtrons laws, the force applied produces an accelaration proportioanl to the mass of the body.
So heavy train small accelaration
Light train fast accelration.

Lets assume the locomotive has a fixed constant force F that it applies on the train. That force causes according to Newton a change in the momentum p of the train by F=Delta p/ Delta t. The momentum is defined as p=mv, so Delat p = m Delta v for a given m. Since the change of the momentum is also fixed, so Delta p = const. if m gets smaller Delta v must get bigger.

Since the weight of the full train is much larger than of an empty one, the engine has to do a lot more work to pull it.

Because the force F that pushes the trains is the same for both of them, but the loaded train will have a higher weight.
F = a*m (F=Force, a=acceleration, m=mass)
F/m = a
Which means, the higher the mass is, the lower the acceleration will become.

an engine applies force to the train. Force can be defined as F=mass x accelleration. If the same amount of force is applied to two trains,
m1a1 = m2a2
If m2 is lighter than m1, a2 MUST be greater than a1 to make the relation hold.

Inertia...or is it momentum?...
since the train is heavy, it's harder to move with the same amout of force that you would use to move an empty train
