That's sort of funny.
When I was a kid, I had a nightlight or needed the door open a bit so the hall light could come in. At some point in my teen years (I think), that all changed. Now I'm middle-aged, and if I have ANY light in the room whatsoever I cannot sleep. I need darkness to sleep.
[I had/have a VIVID imagination, and we lived next door to a cemetary. Not good for a kid with wild ideas and no boundaries for his mind... :) ]
I have three kids.
The eldest (11) now needs it to be dark, in order to sleep.
The "middlest" (almost 10) needs the door open a crack or he becomes uncomfortable.
The youngest (8) needs her night light still. She also asks for the hall light to be on and the door open, but we're trying to break her of the habit of needing both, since she seems like she can handle just the night light.
I'd say maybe by teenage years, the kids could transition to not needing any sort of light. Then again, they are usually sleeping so much anyway, light won't bother them at all. :)

Gee, my wife and I use a night light, and I'm 50. It never had anything to do with being afraid of the dark. (Well, OK, it did before I was about 10 years old.) I just don't like to run into furniture when I wake up at night to pee. Having a night light is just sensible.

Is that the only purpose for a night light...fear? Perhaps lighting the way when getting up in the night is just a safety measure. Night lights can also do other things.

I'm still afraid of the dark, and I'm 42! I still leave a hall light on at night.
