The reason I ask is because a client recently sent me 100M as a qty request for an estimate but in conversations clarified that as 100 thousand. He said 100MM means millions and M means thousands. I've seen the MM used before, but I just wanted to check about the M.

Most people will recognize it as million, but in accounting practices, 100M can mean 100 thousand from the Latin mille, while MM is used for million.

You see this usage in the traditional CPM for cost per thousand.

Why would 100M mean one hundred thousand? Every time I've seen it used 100M has meant one hundred million.

I suppose since M is the Roman numeral for 1000 that somebody could think 100M means 100,000 but that sort of mixing of Arabic and Roman numerals is generally not done.

In common usage 100K means 100,000 and 100M means 100,000,000
