The following is a link to materials and instructions to build the deck without attaching it to the house.

Lowes has a pamphlet that tells you how much wood(2x6's,4x4's) and concrete pads you will need(its where they sell the composite decking stuff) As a guess(not penciled out)about 70 2x6x10'.. If you go with the composit it will probably cost 3x treated wood. Depending on the wood cost it should be < $2 a ft.sq. Trick in leveling:: start at your highest point and add dirt to bring the lower piers up to level.Trust me if you start at the lowest point and dig down to level out you are going to get into trouble(not to mention do a lot more work).

Big Sigh,,, not much help in the first 4.

materials:

4 x4 pressure treated posts
Pier blocks to support them, or a post hole digger, and some concrete to stabilize in ground.
2 x 6 or 2 x 8 pressure treated lumber to fit to size desired, including support beams spaced appropriately.
Decking lumber, usually 7/8 ths treated,, or 2 x 6---8 for the surface.
galvanized deck screws.
Hammer/Cordless Drill/ framing square/ cord to line out the frame, and square it to the 4 opposing corners/ stain or Thompsons treatment.

Contact me e mail for building details.

Then where do you want it attached too? A tree? Go to a home improvement center and ask them what you will need to do and what materials, but I'm sure that there are going to be city/county ordinances pertaining to that. It is a safety factor not to have it secured to a solid structure. If its not going to be on the house than it will be called a PATIO.
