we have a 1990 plymouth voyager, the trans went out a few months back. she does have high miles, but the girl we bought it off of has all the receipts for all that has been done to it, we can't afford to trade it in, too many $$ medical bills!!! at first we have tried to find a new one, well, the price is too high on them, so how or what do we look for in a used one?? would any other year trans fit as long as it has overdrive, ( i was told it has to have overdrive, or the computer won't work in the van if it is the wrong one) any info would be greatly appreciated since i am no mechanic!!

A lot is going to depend on the engine that you have in the van, There was a 3.0 and a 3.3 offered in that vehicle. Both of them came were offered with an overdrive transmission.

If you have a 3.0 you could check with a junkyard for cost and availability of a transmission. They also have interchange charts, that will tell you what other years and models will fit.

If you have a 3.3 you can give up looking for a used transmission. The odds of finding a good one are very slim, most junkyards do not even sell them, because they tended to go bad.

You most likely can buy another van for the cost of a rebuilt transmission. The factory rebuilt, which is all I would consider for that vehicle, will cost you about $1500-1800. At that price I would consider another van instead.

You say the transmission went out. You do not say what it is doing? It could be just a sensor that is causing the problem. If the output sensor or the turbine speed sensor goes bad, the car will go into limp mode and not shift! A $25 sensor fixed mine 125,000 miles ago!

Assuming it has the 3.0 v6 as most 90 models do. you may be able to use a trans from a 89 to midyear 92.
One last thing, the amount of cash you are putting in a caravan. I would just find another van.

on that van you have if it has a 3.0 v6 in it then you can use a trams. from an 88 to a 93 with overdrive and you can also run a none overdrive in it to but you wont get as good of mileage that you did with overdrive

the new trans has to be for the existing engine size, and yes it has to have OD. Has anyone tried changing the filter and fluid in the trans?

i will have to agree with fire4511 on this one ...... i would only go with a rebuilt transmission ..... but could be as simple as a sensor, depending on what it is doing
