My husband and I are going to be starting the fertility pill and I was wondering if anyone out there has taken it and if there are common side effects? What is the % increase that you will have a mulitple birth?

Hi. This is similar to a question I just answered so I took the liberty of using my answer for your question as well.

To answer your questions... For women that take clomid, common side effects may be hot flashes and mood irritability. Fortunately these only usually last for for as long as you take the medication.

Other side effects you need to be aware of are:
(1) the chance of twins...in general for clomid it's about 7% (for reference the chance of twins in the general population is about 1 in 80)...the chance of triplets or more with clomid is less than 1%.
(2) The chance of ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome (OHSS). This happens when your body sees too much estrogen as a by-product of overproduction from too many follicles. This is extremely rare with clomid use, and happens moreso with IVF (when we're trying to make 8-10 follicles). BUT, everyone has a different threshold where estrogen levels are "too much". Symptoms of this might be accumulation of fluid in the belly or lungs, or formation of blood clots in the leg, lung or head.

(3) The chance of cycle cancellation due to over or under-stimulation. In general with clomid this is a non-issue as a number of practioners choose not to monitor the "effectiveness" of clomid with ultrasound. However if they were to use the ultrasound and find that no follicles grow(about 20% of women who don't ovulate normally will be resistant to clomid) or too many follicles (i.e. making 4 or more follicles meaning you might have a chance of quads and note every physician's comfort threshold may differ depending on your age and other factors) they might cancel your cycle.

(4) There was some speculation that over 12-13 cycles of clomid may lead to a rise in ovarian cancer. Fortunately this has not been substantiated in later studies. In any event, you shouldn't being using clomid for that long. After 4-6 failed attempts with clomid (or less depending on your threshold of how agressive you'd like to be) you should move onto other therapy.

REgarding your chance for success: this really depends on why you're having difficulty conceiving. If you are "anovulatory" meaning that you don't normally ovulate every month, using clomid to make you ovulate at least one follicle should put you at the baseline rate of pregnancy for any other couple out there which is about 20-25% per month. Remember that about 20% of women that don't regularly ovulate may not respond to clomid. In this case pre-sensitization with metformin or advancement to gonadotropin injections would be indicated.

Hope that helps!

I assume you're talking about the prescription Medication Clomid. You should check out what Yahoo Health has to say about it. I took it for 6 mo. with no success. The first month I developed Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome and had to go to the ER twice. But I've read that condition is pretty rare and I'm sensitive to new medications. I took it for 5 more months with no side effects except for later ovulation by a day or 2. As far as mulitples there's a slight increase, not enough to worry about though. Good Luck

What fertility pill are you taking? If its clomid you have an 80% chance of have a mulitple birth. If you have polycystic ovaries you have an eve greater chance of having a higher number multiple birth. Normally with Clomid though the multiple birth is only twins. Call your dr or pharmacist to see about the side effects because I don't know.

The chances of multiple birth is more high in In-Vitro not just because you take clomid or metphormin. But, it is possible. I just started my 2nd round of clomis and mepthormin after having ovarian drilling done. Actually if you are having problems ovulating i would talk to your doctor about ovarian drilling. It has helped me tremedously. But, i had no side effects on clomid after a year of taking it and well the metphormin makes me go #2 alot lol

Which fertility pill?

I took Clomid too, for a year and turned out to not be what I needed. When I was taking it I was tired all the time. It also can cause hot flashes. (I thought I was going through premature menopause-scary when you're trying to get pregnant!!). The % of multiples depends on the dose. Talk to your doctor about it.

I took Clomid, and didn't have any side effects at all. I don't know what the % of multiple births is, but you are greatly improving your chances of having a multiple birth, because Clomid could make you ovulate more than one egg.

I took clomid for six months before I was able to get pregnant. That was 10 years ago. I don't remember having any major side effects and the possibilty of have multiples wasn't that high.

It depends on which fertility pill. The most common is Clomid. Some of its side effects are infertility (ironic, isn't it?) and ovarian cancer.

If you are talking about clomid......

The risks of mulitple babies are low.

Side effects include hot flashes, moodiness, and possibly some diziness or nausea.

Good luck with them!
