Interesting question. Unemployment is actually a product of the industrial revolution, where workers (and families) were brought in from the farms where they had traditionally laboured, to work in factories. During the agricultural period, everyone worked. Every member of the family contributed in some way, even the littlest kids. But once they were taken from the land and moved into the cities, they had to find jobs working for someone else, in whatever capacity they could. If their employer didn't like them, they lost their job. If the employer went broke, they lost their job. If they were ill or unable to work, they lost their job.
During times of extreme crisis, such as the Great Depression, they lost their job.
The histories of the Industrial Revolution, unemployment, and the rise of unionism are all braided together, and it is a fascinating study.
Hope this helps.

There has never really been "unemployment" as such until the Industrial age. Before that, most people lived Agrarian subsidence lifestyles, ie working on the land growing their own food, with the excess going to the landowner as taxes. With the beginning of Industrialisation in England, more and more people began flooding into the new cities to find employment in factories. However, there were initially no unions or workers rights, and as a result workers were treated poorly. If they failed to meet their employers expectations, or he was too greedy or inrresponsible and the factory went bust, then everyone was turfed out with no redundancy. Hello unemployment.....

Yes.I know It started with Adam and Eve.Since they were unemployed they produced us all. Then unemploment started in Britain and they solved with industrialisation, colonialism. Then the unemployment moved to USA,they are solving it by killing Iraquis.Unemployment is prevalent in most of the Asian and African countries and China. There is not much problem in Japan.Unemployment can be solved only by fast economic develpoment/growth.The present problem in UK and USA is due to slow economic growth, and competition from developing countries.USA has become high cost economy and its products have become not competitive in the world market.Relatively cheap products from China,Japan and India is getting more grip over the world market. In order to maintain bottomlevels, companies resort to out sourcing. The un employment in USA and UK can be solved only by general wage cut and control of cost of production which may not get popular
support.

actually this is quite easy .... before man had civilized there nothing like a job and so you could call all of them unemployed and till very recently like 1600-1700's women were not encouraged to be employed . for example Emily Bronte - the author of wuthering heights took the pen name Acton bell so that that people will not discard the book just because it was written by a lady ............................
