What are those categories. I found all kinds of stuff for both and I don't know how to classifiy considering my teach only gave me "3 sub cat(s) for poetry and 4 for prose. Was my teach. right in only giving 3 for poetry and 4 for prose?

Well, "Genre" is a generic term for ANY type of classification of literature, and there are many more categories than 3 for poetry and 4 for prose. I'm curious what categories were given to you, and how specific the teacher wants you to be.
If it is up to you to select those categories, you can be very general (Like for prose, you could say Fiction, non-fiction, biography, etc. or more specifically Horror, Mystery, coming-of-age, historical fiction, and on and on...)

In Poetry, one could classify into many diverse categories as well, such as epic, prose poem, sonnets, pastoral, free verse, loss poems, death poems, poems about cheese, etc.

To classify any group of literature, you'd need to figure out what they have in common, and group them accordingly. That's the best I can answer for you with the question the way it is.
