Priestly was involved in the discovery of the element oxygen.

However, he isn't given as much accolades as you might expect, largely because he endorsed the theory of phlogiston until his end.

That theory is a really confusing and hard to explain theory of how materials react chemically, and why some materials get lighter or heavier when burned.
It's very convoluted, and has a tough time getting to fit w/ the observed facts, but Priestly insisted on it despite improvements w/ atomic/molecular theory which worked far better.

So, if you have teachers who endorse "Evolution" (biological evolution) as a theory, you might want to remind them that this has happened before. A dumb, confusing, illogical theory was INSISTED as being true by the experts, but was later dismissed as useless.

Joseph Priestley (March 13, 1733 – February 8, 1804) was an English chemist, philosopher, dissenting clergyman, and educator.

He is known for his investigations of carbon dioxide and the co-discovery of oxygen.
