The United States has come to be hated, tolerated, and insulted in most of the world for it's interference with other countries. Should we become the isolationist country we tried to be before WWI or should we continue to play the major role in world affairs we have for the past 60 years?

as an addition I would just like to say that it is possible to become isolationist-esque without stopping trade. We can trade with companies outside the U.S. but will not interfere with their political, humanitarian, or development aspects. One, European I assume, says that we are idiots who are too stupid to see the mistakes we gross mistakes we have made recently. Yes, we know we made mistakes. Some of these mistakes, however, were not the peoples fault it was the "select few" who feel they have a better right to make decisions about the general public's welfare than the public themselves. "People do not know what they need or want we must decide that for them." So once again, I ask, Should the U.S. stop "interfering" with all the other countries affairs?

I've thought that for at least 10 years. The only problem is with the global economy, it is hard to not be involved in all these other countries.

To explain why everyone hates you I've cut and pasted my answer to a different question:
America is mostly a country of the unbelievably stupid, naive and ignorant.
However, it has become rich and powerful because of a land rich in natural resources (taken with much bloodshed from the natives) and because of a small minority of brilliant scientists and intellectuals who are held in contempt by the majority who take advantage of their achievements.
America has been so provably wrong on so many issues it is absurd and they are too stupid to see it.
1. They now talk about solving the problems of the Middle East after voting in a president who initially said the rest of the world didn't matter to Americans (and wanted to pull out of the Palestinian/Israeli peace process- the Palestinian situation being a prime recruiting sergeant for terrorists)
2. They ignored the rest of the world who warned that they should take stock and plan before invading Iraq (and many of these supported eventual military action.
3. They said they don't believe in Global Warming (the fact that they would ignore their own Academy of Science shows how anti-intellectual they are).
And of course many want to be American-its like the kid at school who toadies to the school bully hoping for protection

There is only one direction for every country and thats to become integated with the world via things like the UN, IMF,...
Isolation will never work, although Bush has made a mess of the world, america has the potenial to do great good for the world by working with other nations and respecting other ways of solving problems

Let's see, around 40% of US product sales are overseas, we get most of our oil and some 60% of our consumer goods from other countries, foreign countries hold the bonds representing over 85% of our national debt (because of W's excessive spending without raising any income)...
Not possible. The days when we could stick our heads in the sand and try to ignore the rest of the world are long gone.

No, because then people would B*tch because we were not helping in world affairs. I blame the media for making us look so bad to the world. This country has become the prime example of the expression, "Damned if you do, damned if you dont"

Jesus "everyone hates us". Yeah, that's why people from every country want to be Americans.
Isolationist policy led directly to World War 1 and 2. Do you want another World War?

I believe we should. Im tired of countries hating us when we try to help. But still hate us when we try to stay out of it. The us economy is very capable of sustaining itself. Onething I would see being an issue is oil we would need to interact with those countries. Other than that we have everything we need in the U.S.
