A header under a window? I don't think so, unless it's a second story, even that's iffy. well to answer your question yes, a window on a load bearing wall, which it probably is, will have a header above it, usually all the way up to the top plate. Then it has 2 king studs which will also run to the top plate an next to the header, then depending on the size of the window there will be either 2 or 4 trimmers under the header next to the window... so you can you just need some know how, some time, the right tools and some elbow grease.

Do you mean use the opening? Yes, you can but you will have to find out if there is a header under the window. That is a beam or a set of boards that will disperse the weight of the ceiling to each side of the window and around it to the floor, so it doesn't sit on the window and sag or crush it. Next, go to the home improvement store and ask them what you will need to change the window. Try going to www.diynetwork.com or www.hgtv.com and type in what you are looking to do and it should be able to help you with the transition. Its a job, so get ready!!!

anything is possible if you have the money, permits from the city and a good contractor.
if you want to do it yourself then make sure it is constructed acording to the building code. use the building code as your guide to proper installation.
