So much advice tells us to 'be ourselves' or 'be true to ourselves', and yet we would all agree that it behooves us to undertake a certain amount of self improvement e.g. if someone tells you that you are rude, it would be worthwhile makeing an attempt to be more courteous, the same goes with other things like being more confident, more loving, more literate, more open minded, more healthy etc.

This contradiction has been haunting me for years. I would very much like to change and improve myself, but I keep being told that I should just be myself. What am I supposed to do?

Don't worry to much about that, stay true to yourself and please don't pay attention to people that give you that kind of "friendly advice". If we all selfimpoved and became what others want us to be, we will be perfect and that is impossible. People are unique and thats why you shouldn't change for anyone.
Be yourself girl and staff them all.

P.S. If you do want to self improve do it for yourself and nobody else. Good luck

I don't think there are any aspects of ourselves that we 'just have to live with', with the exception of physical traits that we cannot change, such as height. I think the answer to your question lies in a poster I saw at my local gym. It said "Be yourself, only better". We all have limitations to our talents and abilities e.g. I will never be a scratch golfer, but I can still continue to improve and play the best game I am capable of playing. We can all outplay ourselves if we really try. The continual desire for improvement however should not stop us accepting ourselves as worthwhile but flawed human beings who are just fine the way we are. What we are aiming to do is improve our performance capabilities in certain areas, not change ourselves as people; and in that is the distinction you are looking for I think.

Being true to yourself, you recognize that you could have handled a particular situation with more tact, more care, more love and you feel you could build in that direction. We are all a work in progress and as such, there is room for improvement. That is a personal choice and decision...change or not...so being true to self means recognition of both shortcomings and strengths in equal balance.

If you want to improve yourself for your own self esteem go for it.But if people like you now just change your outside appearance and keep the inner self intact.Good luck.

make the changes only you would approve of and feel comfortable about. if you find there are no changes you'd like to make then you are you as you are and nothing can change that
i think body changes such as surgery are a bit much, but a change in wardrobe and colours can do lots to your self esteem.
