Because not everyone in the world has a web cam, or knows how to upload (I think that's what it's called) a picture to use, and with a lot of others they are probably just too fat and ugly and don't want to scare anyone!!

Avatars are a way of expressing your personality. Some people would rather not post their picture for everyone to see. So they express themselves through the avatars.

i would think alot of people aren't comfortable putting their photos up here, or they don't have one on their computer or they don't know how to do it, personally i just haven't bothered. and don't forget honestly i could pick any picture on the net and put it up there, i could change it everyday and none of them are necessarily me, it has nothing to do with the words i type which are me. i guess i just put more stock in the words i see than i would what someone looks like.
