The name Scandinavia comes from the region known as Scandia by the Greeks. 'Navia' actually means 'Land of Ships." Because of the association of the Scandians using the sea to explore, trade with Europe and to conquer other Europeans. Literally it means "Land of Scandian Ships". Scandia was known as Skane to the Scandinavians, it's on the southernmost end of Sweden.

Today the countries are Sweden, Norway, and Denmark (Jutland (Jylland) attached to Northern Germany, the islands of Funen (Fyn), Zealand (Sjælland), Bornholm (Bornholm) and many smaller islands, often referred to as the Danish Archipelago, including the islands in the Baltic Sea, the Faroe Islands and Greenland (belong to Denmark), and sometimes Iceland because it was settled by Norsemen.

Finland is also considered Scandinavian, but only by geography, not by culture. The Finns, Kven, and Saami are not considered Scandinavian peoples.
