Anything that they won't choke on is fine.
My kids all ate oatmeal and fruit when they were a couple weeks old. I started them with mashed potatoes and stuff along with baby food at 4 mon. or so, and just baby fruit before then. At 8 mon. your baby is old enough to eat finger foods such as crackers and cereal and things like that. Don't be afraid to try things with your baby. As long as it isn't too hard for them and they won't choke on it, it is ok.

You should start off with the nasty foods no sweets. If you start with the sweets, they will not like the other stuff. Start off with green beans, all the dark veggies and then after a week slowly start with the sweets.

Also check with your doctor, they should be able to give you the advice for exactly what you need.

I always found Gerber helpful. As for what you can feed, it's really up to you. Start off with simple fruits and veggies like applesauce, bananas, peas, sweet potatoes, and squash.

Call your pediatrician. You should have researched this already. Your baby should be eating stage 3 foods.
